About Me
I'm deeply grateful to have discovered work that I love so much, so early in life. I got the opportunity to begin my work with English learners when I was a high schooler in San Diego. My journalism teacher at the time, knowing how eagerly I was learning Spanish and the interest I had shown in the education system, invited me to join her as a tutor at a summer program for middle schoolers whose parents were migrant farm workers. I accepted the invitation and eagerly returned again the next summer.
When I started as an undergrad at UC Berkeley, I joined the student newspaper but soon realized that I was not energized by my reporting (rather, my roommate later conveyed that I was unusually cranky and stressed on days that I was writing stories). The second semester, I shifted gears and joined a literacy mentorship program called BUILD (Berkeley United in Literacy Development). I came to life working with elementary schoolers from Spanish-speaking homes. I would treasure the time spent reading with them and building relationships while we developed their fluency, accuracy and comprehension. It quickly became clear that teaching was for me.
Ok, so that's the introduction to me as a teacher! The Teaching Experience section picks up where I'm leaving off here, and the resume below sums things up nicely.

Now a bit more about me . . .
I basically really like to be outside (unless it's cold so the Texas heat has been a welcome change from Michigan winters!). My husband Daniel and I like to get out to run and hike, and love to go camping and kayaking when we get the chance! This picture shows us kayaking along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Cooking is also big for me! I rave about how many things you can make in an Instant Pot, and my favorite place to go for recipes is Amy + Jacky's www.pressurecookrecipes.com/. I'm also a novice gardener and intermediate house plant keeper! |
